Introducing Big Medicine: York Outdoors, a compelling film from the National Park Service and New Media that invites us to reconsider how we tell the story of America—and who gets to be part of that story.
At the center of the film is York, the enslaved man who was a full participant in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Through the powerful storytelling of Hasan Davis—an acclaimed living history interpreter who has spent decades embodying York—we begin to see the contours of a life shaped by strength, resilience, and erasure.
But this film is not just about the past. It’s also about the present and the future.
Big Medicine: York Outdoors features the voices and presence of contemporary Black outdoor leaders—hikers, educators, and cultural advocates—who are reclaiming space in landscapes where Black stories have often gone untold or unacknowledged. Their presence in the film connects York’s journey to a growing movement that challenges assumptions about who belongs in the outdoors and who gets to shape its meaning.
Together, these voices—past and present—offer a more honest, inclusive, and dynamic vision of the American experience.
Please join in watching Big Medicine: York Outdoors brought to you by the Nez Perce County Historical Society and the Lewiston City Library.
