Rooted in place: Regional environment featured in upcoming art show
Clarkston, Wash. — A group of local artists are opening their first collective art exhibition, “Creative Confluence,” on Friday, July 10 from 4-7 p.m. at the Valley Art Center in Clarkston. The show runs through July 29.
The collective show features five local artists, all of whom grew up in the LC valley or have lived here for more than 20 years. The result is a body of work that arises from a deep, long-time love of local landscapes and the natural elements that build them.
“All of the work in the show has a connection to place,” said Erin Cassetto, artist and organizer for the show. “It’s inspired or influenced by the regional environment.”
Among them are pieces that feature the rolling hills of the Palouse, the clear waters of the North Fork, the jagged edges of Hells Canyon, and the ever-changing skies above. The work captures the nuances of place familiar to those who have spent significant time in and around these spaces.
Cassetto, who has been doing watercolor work since 2016, was initially approached about doing a show and pulled together a group of artists she knew from the community. In addition to Cassetto, the show will include work by Kelsey Grafton (ceramics, oil, mixed media), Jean Arnold (oil, watercolor), Joe Anderson (photography), and Michelle Schmidt (papercut). Cassetto, Grafton, and Arnold hold MFAs, have won numerous awards, and have had work featured regionally and nationally. Anderson operates Lucidity Gallery in downtown Lewiston.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. The Valley Art Center is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tues. – Sat. and is located at 842 6th St. in Clarkston.
